What is Cryopreservation?

Cryopreservation is a procedure to freeze eggs, sperm, embryos or tissues at very low temperatures (-196°C) using liquid nitrogen. This keeps them safe and usable for future fertility treatments or until you need them. At our cryopreservation clinic in Kolkata, we use advanced vitrification (freezing methods) that protect your reproductive cells for years without damage.

Cryopreservation Procedure

Ovarian Stimulation

Consultation:

Individuals will have a direct consultation with a specialist doctor to discuss their needs for safe cryopreservation in Kolkata.

Egg Collection

Ovarian Stimulation (for egg freezing):

To freeze eggs, you will receive hormone injections for 8-12 days, stimulating your ovaries to produce multiple eggs.

Fertilisation

Collection:

Eggs: Eggs are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure called transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. This procedure is done under light sedation and takes about 20-30 minutes.

Sperm: Sperm is collected through ejaculation or, if necessary, testicular aspiration.

Embryos: Embryos are developed through IVF by fertilising eggs with sperm in our laboratory before freezing.

 Blastocyst Culture

Laboratory Processing:

Our embryologists carefully examine the collected cells under microscopes to assess quality. They also put eggs and embryos in unique culture dishes with nutrients.

 Embryo Selection

Cryoprotection and Vitrification:

The samples are treated with unique protective solutions called cryoprotectants that replace water in the cells. It prevents ice crystal formation, which could damage the cells. Our lab uses a rapid freezing (vitrification) method, transforming the cells into a glass-like state within seconds.

 Transfer Procedure

Storage:

The protected samples are placed in labelled straws or vials and stored in tanks filled with liquid nitrogen at -196°C.

Luteal Support

Thawing & Usage:

When needed, the samples are carefully thawed and used in assisted reproductive procedures such as IVF or ICSI.
